How to Check Battery Health on Android (Samsung, Pixel and Other Phones)

Where to find battery health on Pixel, Samsung and other Android phones, what the numbers mean, and when to replace a worn battery.

The quickest way to check battery health on Android is Settings, then Battery. On a Pixel 8a or newer, tap Battery health. On a recent Samsung Galaxy, open Battery information. If your phone has neither, a diagnostic app and a few simple signs will tell you what you need to know.

Android has no single battery health screen that every brand uses, so the answer depends on your phone. This guide covers Pixel, Samsung and everything else, and explains what the numbers mean for you.

How to check battery health on a Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings, tap Battery, then tap Battery health.
  2. Read the status. Normal means the battery is doing fine. Reduced means its capacity has fallen below 80% of the original.
  3. Tap Battery capacity to see the estimated percentage.
  4. For the cycle count and the battery’s dates, go to Settings, About phone, Battery information.

Google counts a cycle as the full equivalent of one discharge and recharge, so using half your charge today and half tomorrow adds up to one cycle. It rates the Pixel 3 through the Pixel 8 Pro, plus the Pixel Fold, for about 800 cycles before capacity drops to 80%. The Pixel 8a and later are rated for about 1,000. The “date of first use” can be earlier than the day you bought the phone, because of checks done at the factory.

How to check battery health on a Samsung Galaxy

Method 1: Battery information in Settings

On One UI 7 (Android 15) or later, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery information. Depending on your model you may see a health percentage, a cycle count and a short history. If the option is missing, your model or region does not have it yet.

Method 2: Samsung Members diagnostics

  1. Open the Samsung Members app. If you cannot find it, install it from the Galaxy Store.
  2. Tap Support at the bottom right.
  3. Choose Phone diagnostics, then Battery status, and run the test.

You get a rating of Normal, Weak or Bad. It does not give a percentage, but a Weak or Bad result is a clear sign to plan a replacement.

How to check battery health on any Android phone

When your phone has no built in screen, a battery app can estimate the number. AccuBattery is a popular one. Install it from Google Play only, read the permissions it asks for, and then charge your phone as usual. The app compares how much charge goes in with the percentage your phone reports. After several days of normal use it shows an estimated health percentage and capacity in mAh. Treat that as a good estimate, not an official figure.

You may also see advice to type *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer. On some phones this opens a hidden testing menu with battery information, but it only shows a rough label such as Good, and many brands have blocked it. We would not rely on it.

How to read the results

Google says a battery is Reduced once capacity drops below 80%. For other phones, this rule of thumb is widely used:

  • 90 to 100%: excellent. Short days are more likely caused by apps or screen time.
  • 80 to 89%: normal wear for a phone that is a year or two old.
  • 70 to 79%: worn. You will notice it, especially in cold weather.
  • Below 70%: poor. A replacement is usually the practical fix.

Signs your battery is worn out, even without a number

  • The percentage falls fast, for example from 30% to 5% in a few minutes.
  • The phone shuts down while it still shows 15% or 20%.
  • You charge it more than twice a day to get through ordinary use.
  • It runs warm while idle or on a normal charger.
  • It restarts when you open a heavy app or game.
  • The back cover lifts or the screen bulges. This is a swollen battery. Stop charging the phone, do not press on it, and take it to a service centre as soon as you can.

How to slow down battery wear

  • Samsung: open Settings, Battery, Battery protection. Basic is gentle, Adaptive avoids sitting at 100% overnight, and Maximum stops charging at about 80%.
  • Pixel: keep Battery health assistance on, under Settings, Battery, Battery health. From about 200 cycles it lowers the battery’s maximum voltage a little at a time to slow ageing. You may notice slightly shorter runtime, which is the trade.
  • Keep it cool. Heat does more damage than anything else. Avoid gaming while charging and never leave the phone in a hot car.
  • Stay between 20% and 80% when it is easy. Constant 0 to 100% charging wears a battery faster.
  • Use a good charger and cable. See our guide to choosing the right phone charger for what to look for.

When to replace the battery

Google advises replacing a Pixel battery once its status reads Reduced. For any phone, think about a replacement around 80% if your days are getting short, and do not wait much below 70%. Check your warranty first. A service centre run by the phone maker uses genuine parts, while a local repair shop can cost less but varies in quality, so ask what part they use and what warranty they give.

If the battery is weak but not swollen, an old phone can still earn its keep as a plugged in camera. See how to turn an old Android phone into a camera or baby monitor.

Android battery health: common questions

How do I check battery health on Samsung without an app?

On a Galaxy phone running One UI 7 or later, open Settings, Battery, then Battery information. Some models and regions show a health percentage and a cycle count there. If you do not see it, use the Samsung Members app, which is made by Samsung and gives a Normal, Weak or Bad rating.

Is 85% battery health good?

Yes. Batteries lose capacity gradually, and 80 to 89% is normal wear. Most people do not notice a difference until the number falls closer to 80%.

How many charge cycles does an Android battery last?

It depends on the phone. Google rates Pixel phones from the Pixel 3 to the Pixel 8 Pro for about 800 cycles before capacity falls to 80%, and the Pixel 8a and later for about 1,000. Other brands publish their own figures, so check the maker’s specifications.

Why is there no battery health option on my phone?

Android does not require one, so many phones skip it. Pixel phones before the 8a, for example, do not show a health status. Use Samsung Members, a battery app or a service centre test instead.

Are battery health apps accurate?

They give estimates. An app like AccuBattery learns from your charging over several days, so its number improves with time. Watch the trend over weeks rather than trusting a single reading.

Can low battery health make my phone slower?

It can. A worn battery struggles to deliver power in short bursts, which can cause sudden shutdowns on some phones and slowdowns on others.
